Fusing elements of bluegrass, folk-rock,and jazz, Steep Ravine has defied their youthful age by developing their soulful sound and fiery instrumentals into their own uniquely Californian sound. Songwriter Simon Linsteadt (guitar, lead vocals) and Jan Purat (violin, vocals) began playing music together in high school in Northern California, later moving on to study music at UC Santa Cruz and the California Jazz Conservatory. They fortuitously met bassist Alex Bice (bass, vocals) through jam sessions in Santa Cruz. Percussionist Jeff Wilson, a close musical compadre, is the band’s most recent addition. Steep Ravine has toured extensively throughout the country and has released two full-length records of all original material. They’ve performed at High Sierra Music Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, Four Corners Folk Festival, Grass Valley Bluegrass and Parkfield Bluegrass Festivals and have been direct support to California Honeydrops, Steep Canyon Rangers, Poor Man’s Whiskey, and others.
“Built on a solid foundation of gifted songwriting, fine singing, and acoustic string dexterity, [Steep Ravine] may well be opening up a whole new stylistic direction for musicians and listeners alike to follow.”

“The material is fresh, the art is good and the music is rich. What’s not to like?”
“I love Steep Ravine! These guys can lay the hammer down on traditional bluegrass and then turn around and amaze you with innovative and tasteful new songs. They’re laying the foundation to be heavy hitters on the acoustic scene.”
